After learning about the steps to take, you are going to feel comfortable and confident to do this project on your own if you choose to.

This post is all about the steps to take in order to learn how to install artificial turf.

What you will need:

  • artificial turf
  • roadbase
  • plate compactor or tamper
  • tape measurer
  • rake
  • broom
  • utility Knife
  • nails or staples
  • seam tape
  • turf infill

1. Calculations

Measure the area with a tape measurer to get square footage. Artificial turf is sold by square footage and depending on the vendor, you may have to buy full rolls.

2. Remove ground

Remove existing ground in place. Dig and remove 4 inches of ground.

3. Add Roadbase

Add the roadbase in layers and spread out evenly using a rake. Run a plate compactor over the roadbase to compact and even out area. If you do not have a plate compactor, you can use a tamper to compact the base.

4. Roll out the Turf

Artificial turf will come in rolls. Roll out the artificial turf and let it sit out for at least 30 minutes to give the artificial turf time to expand and flatten out. Make sure to roll out the turf so that the turf blades are facing the same direction if you have multiple rolls.

5. Cut Turf

Cut off the edges of the artificial turf using a utility knife. Make sure you cut in the same direction each time you make a cut.

6. Glue Turf Pieces Together

Roll out seam tape under the artificial turf where pieces need to be connected. Apply turf glue on top of seam tape in a “s” shape.

7. Nail Down Artificial Turf

Use 6 inch nails or landscape staples to nail down the turf with a hammer. Apply nails/staples every 6 inches along the edges and every 2 feet inside and throughout the turf.

8. Spead Out Infill

There are several options for artificial turf infill. the most popular type is silica sand. However, keep in mind that sicila is toxic to humans when inhaled. If area is to be used as a playground or area for pets, check for alternative landfill options.
